Letter from Africa: Kente - the Ghanaian cloth that's on the catwalk - BBC News
The year is 1711 A.D. in what is now Ghana, West Africa - two friends, Krugu Amoaya and Watah Kraban are hunting one afternoon and come across a spider weaving its web. Astounded by its skill and beauty, the friends return back to their village and recreate the spider's techniques and weave a cloth, by hand, out of black and white fibers from a raffia tree. They present this cloth to their King.
