Pines Along the Shore was originally painted in 1896 in the south of France overlooking the Mediterranean. Henri-Edmond Cross was a Neoimpressionist painter. This painting style was a shortly lived avant-garde movement in the 1800s. This style focused on the use of separate touches of pigment interwoven together also known as pointillism. The idea was a more vibrant color would be assembled in the viewers eye. Today the original is currently housed in the Metropolitian Museam of Art.
